Arguing for Change: SPEAK Highlighted in UVM Magazine

In the Fall 2024 issue of UVM Magazine, the University of Vermont highlighted SPEAK's partnership with UVM LAPP and our ongoing prison debate program at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility.

In the piece, titled “Arguing for Change”, SPEAK volunteer Gavin Alberts explains, “Debate is not just this thing we do on weekends[.] It has a real impact on people.” Reflecting on the value of SPEAK's debate programs - which SPEAK has been running at CRCF since 2015 - founder Jessica Bullock stated, “Education is such a powerful tool, and providing folks with greater access to classrooms and the skills to represent themselves is critical. We try to create that type of environment through SPEAK.” Quoting the late UVM Professor Alfred Snider, Bullock suggests: “The answer is more debate.”
